I applaud Bawumia for having a strong position on LGBTQ+ issues. – Sheikh Shaibu

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received praise from the National Chief Imam’s spokeswoman, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, for his strong opposition to the contentious Anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

He claims that the Christian and Islamic communities are against the LGBTQ+ community. He is thrilled that a person in a position of authority has adopted a firm opinion on the matter.

Sheikh Shaibu stated, “The Muslim community is on the same page, and when matters arise, we seek to collaborate,” during an April 11 interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse.

Our concern is the topic at the heart of this LGBTQ issue and the measure that was approved by Parliament. It is about the family surviving, which is the family we are trying to save. In this specific case, the Muslim and Christian families are one. We are in agreement.

“So, we would seek to collaborate with the Christian community, having analysed the situation very well, and if we come to agreement, I mean, we could go hand in hand with the Christian community in order to seek an audience with the President to understand why the delay; whether it is a technical issue or whether, in spite of the fact that the issue is at court, the President could have received the bill on his table and agreed to it”.

This comes after the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party addressed thousands of Muslims in Kumasi on Thursday during the Eid prayers, voicing his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana.

In order to protect Ghana’s family structure, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu added that President Akufo-Addo should be pressured to pass the anti-LGBTQ bill into law.

He pointed out that by signing the measure, President Akufo-Addo would gain nothing but a positive legacy and a reputation for upholding the nation’s customs, values, and culture.

The spokesman emphasized that Ghanaians needed to have faith in their politicians to protect the nation’s principles.

“I think that the President should not allow this opportunity to slip by, and I support any inter-faith collaboration to put pressure on the President to assent to the bill and develop it into law”.

“I think that we are ready to work together. As I speak, I speak confidently on behalf of the Chief Iman because, in the spirit, mindset and philosophy of the Chief Imam, I believe strongly in my conviction that it is something that the Chief Iman would be prepared to support us to do,” he stated.
